Campaign Details

Helping a child succeed in school is the best way to ensure that they have hope for a bright future. The purpose of Youth LIFT is to help homeless children succeed in school and give them a chance for a better tomorrow.

  • There are approximately 1.3 million homeless children in the school system in the United States
  • 57% of those children do not attend school regularly
  • The school dropout rate for homeless children is 87%
  • Compared to high school graduates, high school dropouts are less likely to find a job and earn a living wage
  • High school dropouts are more likely to rely on public assistance, engage in crime and generate other social costs borne by taxpayers
  • 2/3 of adults experiencing homelessness do not have a high school diploma or a GED

We do not believe that this has to be the pattern for the homeless children of our community.  We strive to give them a chance to rewrite their stories and open doors for opportunities they never thought possible. Our volunteers help these kids understand the importance of an education so they will stay in school and go on to fulfilling careers and self-sufficiency in adulthood breaking the pattern of homelessness. Most importantly, our volunteers help these kids believe in themselves and the reality that they too can achieve all of the things they want in life.  We help these kids see the possibilities, tap into their own potential, and then help them succeed.

Just One Story

When we first met Jill, a 10 year old girl at the time, she was living with her family in a motel. She had not been to school in over a month because she had no transportation. We provided Jill and her mother with bus passes while we worked with her school to coordinate bus transportation. Jill was behind in school and lacked the self-esteem to believe she could improve her grades or even learn basic math. Through dedicated tutoring, Jill began to improve her grades, learn how to study on her own, and organize her school materials. Her math grade improved from a D to a B within a few months, and her school absences decreased dramatically. Over the years, she has been recognized by her class as most improved in math and we have watched her go from a shy girl who would barely talk to anyone to a very vocal advocate for Youth LIFT and, well, everything she enjoys. Let's just say she is not a shy girl anymore.

Youth LIFT provides one-on-one tutoring/mentoring to homeless children like Jill by matching each child with their own volunteer tutor to build meaningful relationships. These volunteers do more than just help with weekly homework, they are these kids' biggest fans. Our volunteers are support systems, cheerleaders and advocates to help our kids overcome the obstacles associated with homelessness to gain their education. We help these kids rewrite their stories!
