Sharkey is Suffering - Please Help!

Meet Sharkey, our 7 year old boy who was surrendered to Rescue because his owners did not have time for him and couldn't afford his medical care.

Sharkey cannot put any weight on his right rear leg because it's too painful for him. In addition, he will need surgery to correct an eye problem. His surgeon will try to perform both, in one long procedure.

Because Sharkey needs so much medical help, nobody has rushed up to foster him. He looks so sad, lying in his boarding cage all day, waiting for a home to call his own.

Can you contribute to his required surgeries, so we can help him feel better, and reduce barriers to finding him a home? Please!

We'd like to give you one final update on Sharkey.

He is recovering from his TPLO and Entropion surgeries. He started walking without his sling, so we were able to move him to a foster home, after 7 expensive weeks in vet boarding.

Sharkey may be slow standing up, but once he is up and walking, he seems to loosen up and he does pretty well. He is in better spirits and you can tell he is feeling better. He likes his short walks.

Sharkey did develop some worrisome eye discharge (as seen in the below picture), so we are treating that.

We hope Sharkey is able to find his forever home soon. In the meantime, he's in a foster home where he is loved and being well cared for.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

It's a new week for Sharkey and he is definitely making some progress.

Sharkey’s bandage is off, so you can see the incision on his leg. He gets sling support for his bathroom breaks, as you can see in the picture below. His eye looks like he has gone 15 rounds with a heavyweight boxer. But the good news here is that he is walking better and the eyelid swelling has gone down.

Sharkey continues to get visits with volunteers, which is always a happy time for him. He should be ready to leave the hospital soon and go to live with a foster family. We'll keep you updated on that.

Please let us, once again, express our appreciation for all of your help. We are very grateful for the support you have given Sharkey. We look forward to when Sharkey is 100% healed and these health challenges are behind him; we hope it's soon.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Thanks to all of the generous donations Sharkey has received, we were able to get his surgery scheduled.

Sharkey's doctors were able to perform both the repair of his torn ACL and the Entropian surgery on his eyelid at the same time. This was wonderful for Sharkey so that he didn't have to undergo two separate surgeries.

Sharkey has started his healing journey and is expected to make a full recovery, though he still has a long road ahead of him. He is recovering at the vet hospital where he gets all the help and care he needs. Though he does have residual pain, which is to be expected, his spirits are lifted when visitors come to spend time with him.

Bandages should come off early next week. In a few weeks after that, Sharkey will be able to walk short distances, gradually increasing as time goes on. As you can see, follow up care for Sharkey will still be necessary for a while. Please share this fundraiser with family and friends. A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated. And if you know anyone who would love to welcome Sharkey into their family, please encourage them to fill out an adoption application on our website:

Sharkey has a lot of love to give, but he will need a home where he can be the only dog in the family.

Thank you for all of your support! This type of care would not be possible without your help.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Campaign Details

When surrendered to us, Sharkey's owners told us that "he just started limping a week ago". But an x-ray by our vet has revealed a complete ACL tear and arthritic growth. Sharkey will require a TPLO surgery to correct this.

One of Sharkey's eyes has a curled under eyelid (entropion) which will require surgery to avoid further ulceration of the cornea and discomfort.

And in addition to all these things, Sharkey has ear infections, allergies, and a foxtail embedded in a front paw. (Our vet has already removed this.) This poor boy has suffered so much!

All of these challenges are fixable but will cost quite a bit of money. We are reaching out to you today to ask for your help.

Please donate to Sharkey's fundraiser to make treatment and recovery possible for him. And please share this fundraising campaign with anyone who you think would be interested in helping.

Thank you so much for your support!
