Campaign Details

Please help us build shelters for our herd.

We currently have 19 horses and burros at the rescue.

This is twice the amount we had last year.

We have at least two more that we need to pick up.

When a rescue comes in they could be severely malnourished (like Cheyenne) or abused (like Peanut) or both (like Shady). Rarely do we receive a horse that is not in horrible condition. We currently have one barn with three stalls for those who first arrive or need additional care. Once the horse is considered healthy enough to move into general population they go into one of three other pastures with the herd that would most fit their personality.

Horses have their own version of herd living and hierarchy, which means the one 12 X 21 shelter we have in each pasture is not sufficient for all to be covered. We have two recently gelded boys who cannot be in the same or adjacent pasture. The mares are picky about who gets to stand near them at any time, much less when it's stormy outside and their nerves are peaked. The burros have their own little herd and are never under the shelter with the horses (their choice).

Over half of our herd are permanent residents, in Sanctuary. They have been determined too ill, not tempered well for a home, or too elderly to be adoptable. The burros that provide us with excellent security in the pastures will always be a part of our family.

We need an additional two to three shelters to allow every animal to seek shelter during inclement/hot weather. The pastures do not have any trees to act as additional shelter. Winter does come slow to this part of Georgia but will hit us hard when it does. Cheyenne has cancer and Sir John and Sebastian have severe arthritis, they need a safe place to shelter.

Our design is simple but so important to the needs of the horses. Our shelters would be 24 x 36 with three sides enclosed. The shelters would be completely built by a professional crew within two weeks of ground breaking. The pictures below show the general style of the shelters.

Please share our dream and help us build the needed shelters for our herd to stay safe in our care.
