Together with the Suffolk County SPCA and Police Department, we were able to offer a safe haven to Dakota, a senior gelding subject to severe neglect. Dakota spent his days confined to a stall, devoid of companionship and adequate care. Concerned neighbors intervened by providing hay to prevent him from starving, but his living conditions were dire.
Upon his rescue, an assessment revealed the extent of Dakota's needs, including medication for Cushing's disease, and a fecal and dental exam. Dakota's hooves were overgrown and he also has severe Thrush.
To support his recovery, Dakota's feeding will occur several times a day, following a prescribed protocol that will evolve based on his needs. Despite his past, Dakota has shown remarkable resilience, enjoying the company of both humans and other horses. While integrating into a herd will take time, he is making progress with the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers.
Dakota’s story is a testament to the importance of equine companionship, proper nutrition, and freedom to thrive. At 13 Hands Equine Rescue, we are committed to providing Dakota and others like him with the care they need to heal physically and emotionally.
Please consider making a donation to support Dakota's recovery. Your generous support will ensure Dakota receives the necessary veterinary care, farrier services, and ongoing nutritional support. By donating, you help Dakota move towards a brighter, healthier future, where he can enjoy the company of his new herd and the love he deserves.
Thank you for being a part of Dakota's journey to recovery. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these wonderful animals.
13 Hands Equine Rescue
About the Organization
Our organization rescues equines, keeping them from the slaughter pipeline. We heal and rehabilitate our equines in an effort to re-home them so they may live out their lives in a loving and safe setting. Some of our rescues are partnered with humans in our equine assisted activities, helping veterans and others with PTSD, anxiety and depression, as well as those with developmental differences.
