PRESERVE & PROVIDE Program start up

I am excited to share with you our latest Community Program, "PRESERVE & PROVIDE", at Give a Dog a Home Rescue.

This innovative initiative aims to provide nutritious, long-lasting food packs to various segments of our community, addressing food insecurity and emergency preparedness needs. Our comprehensive plan includes the establishment of a commercial kitchen equipped with two XL freeze dryers and all necessary facilities to support the program's operations.

To do this we need help with funding the build of a small COMMERCIAL kitchen in the area we had extended the roof from the kennels.

We are hoping for funding and / or construction help!

Fox Bangor News Interview - Preserve & Provide Program

The PRESERVE & PROVIDE program aims to process and distribute freeze-dried, nutritious food packs to various groups, including homeless individuals, low-income families, veterans, seniors, emergency services, children's meal/snack programs, and pets.

Establish a Commercial Kitchen: We aim to construct a room addition onto our kennel building to serve as a fully equipped commercial kitchen. This space will undergo necessary inspections and obtain required licenses to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Can you and / or your company help with any of these?

  • The roof is already installed.
  • The room is approximately 24ft x 12ft and will need concrete floor, sealed, non-porous.
  • Wall panels - non-porous and suitable for commercial kitchen
  • Windows & Doors
  • Insulation
  • Heating / cooling - either by installing in-floor heating and individual a/c unit. We do not want to use the venting system already in place in the kennels for obvious reasons

Acquire Equipment: The commercial kitchen will house two XL freeze dryers, essential kitchen equipment (e.g., 3-basin sink, hand wash sink, dishwasher, steel work table), and refrigeration and freezing units to support food preparation, freeze drying, and storage operations.

We already have a medium freeze dryer which we have been using to learn, experiment and gain feedback which has been tremendously popular. The medium is not big enough to sustain this program, but can be used for small quantity products.

We have also purchased a second hand 3-bay sink to be in compliance with the state of Maine commercial kitchen regulations. We plan on purchasing an upright freezer that is big enough to store the freeze dryer trays in the month of June, due to Lowes having a half price sale on the freezer we are looking to purchase.

We intend to purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera which will be used to check and ensure 100% that the final product is in fact 100% moisture free and therefore safe for packaging and storage for 20+ years.

We have applied for a grant, but would prefer to use the grant money for purchasing the Freeze Dryers and then more produce to freeze dry with the money we wouldn't have to use on the commercial kitchen. Also, we are being pro-active since being awarded the grant is by no means a guarantee and we do not want to hold this program up.

Give a Dog a Home Rescue is a 501c3, non-profit charity and so all donations are tax deductible by following IRS Guidelines.

We would love to discuss our PRESERVE & PROVIDE program more with anyone who is interested in learning more or supporting this much needed, fun and healthy program.

As always any and all help is very much appreciated.
