Please Help Kiwi! She Is Suffering.

Kiwi has suffered years of abuse and neglect. In order to save her, we need your help!

This dog has lived in great pain for some time with absolutely no medical care (see below for a list of ailments).

She is safe with us now but has many hurdles ahead of her. We are hopeful that with the medical care we are providing, she will be able to live the life all dogs deserve.

Please help us by making a donation to Kiwi's care. We anticipate many medical bills and we want to be sure we can afford to give Kiwi all the help she needs.

This little girl is as sweet as they come and, in spite of all she's dealing with, she still wags her tail.

We have another update on Kiwi and this will be the final one. Why? Because Kiwi is finally finished with all of her medical treatments and surgeries, and because Kiwi has just been adopted into a loving home!

Kiwi had surgery to remove her right eye and to make some corrections on her left eye. Now she can finally say good-bye to eye pain. And although her eyesight isn't great, she can see well enough to get around comfortably.

This has been a long road for Kiwi. We started her medical care back in January. Because of the amazing generosity of donors like you, we did not have to make Kiwi wait for any treatments or surgeries; we were able to get everything scheduled timely.

Below is a picture of Kiwi resting comfortably. How wonderful it is knowing she can now live the life she deserves. Thank you so much for making this a "happily ever after" story for Kiwi!

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Kiwi has visited the ophthalmologist and wants to share this update with all of her donors who have made her treatments possible.

Kiwi will need to have surgery “sooner rather than later” to remove the problem eye. But in addition to that, she will need to have a procedure done to help correct a lens luxation in the other eye because it is starting to cause glaucoma. Lens luxation can be a serious, blinding painful condition.

We have eye surgery scheduled for May 2nd. We're hoping this is the last medical procedure Kiwi will need. She has responded beautifully to all of her other medical treatments and if all goes well on May 2nd, she should be ready to move on with her life feeling much better.

Thank you, again, to everyone who has supported Kiwi through positive thoughts and financial assistance.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

We have a new update on Kiwi that we’d like to share with you.

Kiwi had surgery yesterday (April 10th) and did very well. She was spayed, and the intent was also to remove her mammary mass at the same time. Well, good news – the mammary mass was no longer there. Apparently, she didn’t have an actual mass, but instead had swelling from an infection in her mammary gland, which healed from the antibiotics she was taking.

Kiwi also had many, many mouth tumors which her doctors believe to be papillomas (small tumors which are typically benign and caused by a virus). Like the mammary infection, most of these had gone away on their own. The few that remained were removed yesterday during surgery. The vet will be taking a biopsy of these to confirm that they truly are benign.

While Kiwi was under anesthesia, her 3 abscessed incisors were removed, and her remaining teeth were cleaned. Although her canine teeth are not in very good condition, the vet feels that these teeth do not need to be removed.

Kiwi was having so much trouble eating, but now with her infected teeth out and her mouth papillomas gone, she can start enjoying her meals. And as everyone knows who owns a dog, eating is one of the daily joys that all dogs look forward to.

The only remaining issues that need to be addressed at this time are Kiwi’s eyes, and the urinary tract infection (UTI) which she has recently developed. Kiwi is being treated for her UTI now, and our vet feels that Kiwi should be seen by an ophthalmologist to get a professional opinion on her eyes. Her ophthalmologist appointment is all set up for April 20th.

Kiwi will be going back to her foster home today where she has become a treasured member of the family.

Thank you for your support of Kiwi. None of this would have been possible without your help.

It's time for another quick update on Kiwi.

Her most recent bloodwork shows that she continues to get healthier by the day. The vet feels that we no longer have to check her blood weekly. The next check will be on 3/23/23, one month after her last blood test.

We are still not yet ready to proceed with any surgeries for mass removal, spay, or teeth. Kiwi is still not strong enough for any of those procedures. And we are still uncertain if her eye will get better on its own, or if it will have to be removed.

In the meantime, Kiwi is happy in her foster home.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us get Kiwi to this point. Her medical bills have been coming in higher than we had expected. But with your help, we've been able to stay on top of them without having to compromise her care.

We would like to give you a quick update on Kiwi, although there's not much new to report.

Her bloodwork from Wednesday last week does show that she is continuing to get healthier by the day. The anemia, which was very concerning at first, is MUCH better!

Kiwi's next vet appointment is Wednesday the 22nd. The vet will check her blood again at that time.

Kiwi continues to do well in her foster home. She is definitely moving in the right direction!

It has been one week since our last update and we're happy to report that it has been a good week for Kiwi.

Her most recent blood test shows that she is getting healthier and stronger. Kiwi's doctors will be checking her blood again on February 15th and 22nd. As soon as her bloodwork indicates that she is strong enough to undergo surgery, Kiwi will be scheduled to have her mass removed and be spayed.

The veterinary team is still monitoring Kiwi's right eye. We're still not sure if it will improve enough so that she won't have to have it removed. We'll keep you updated on that as we know more.

There will also need to be a surgery to remove Kiwi's fractured and infected teeth. This work cannot be done during Kiwi's first surgery because it will be too much for her to undergo. The removal of the mass is most critical at this time, so it will be done first.

Included in this email are (5) new pictures of Kiwi. She is doing well in her foster home where she is receiving good care and lots of love.

At this time, we at GRCGLA Rescue would like to extend our most sincere appreciation for the support all of you have given Kiwi. We are so very moved by so many people stepping forward to help cover Kiwi's bills; we are overwhelmed by your kindness. Thank you all.

In the past week, Kiwi has improved greatly in many ways. The little girl we took into rescue just over a week ago who seemed to have given up on life, now seems to be in much better spirits. She has a new spring in her step and her appetite has increased to a much healthier level. In addition, her bloodwork has improved dramatically! This is all very good news for Kiwi.

There is, however, some not-so-good news to share too. Kiwi has tested positive for two tick borne diseases: Anaplasma and Ehrlichia. Both of these can be very challenging for dogs. In addition, she also tested positive for Leptospirosis. This is an illness caused by bacteria in contaminated water and dirt. We truly believe we got Kiwi just in time. She certainly wouldn't have survived had she continued without treatment.

Kiwi left the hospital yesterday (2/5/23) to continue her treatments in a loving foster home. She will be re-checked by her doctor on Wednesday to assess her progress. She still needs to have the mass removed that ruptured, and she will still need to be spayed, but these things cannot be done until she is stronger and healthier. On Wednesday, the doctor will also check Kiwi's eye to see if there is improvement. If her eye ulcer improves, we may be able to save her eye.

Included in this email are two updated pictures of Kiwi. Please continue to share her story with friends and family. We still have a long way to go to help Kiwi.

Thank you for all of your support!

Campaign Details

Kiwi came to us in horrific condition! She is covered in fleas and ticks, has painful ulcerated eyes (likely caused by being hit), several fractured teeth which are infected, a mammary mass that just ruptured when she arrived in rescue, and a urinary tract infection.

She is severely underweight, her mouth is covered in lesions, she's anemic, and possibly has pyometra (an infection in the uterus). Understandably, Kiwi is depressed and lethargic.

No dog should have been neglected and abused like this! We see a lot of sadness in dog rescue, but this is one of the more extreme cases.

We immediately started Kiwi on multiple antibiotics, pain medication, and IV fluids.

The doctors tell us that these medical problems are all most-likely fixable but it will take some time to get Kiwi healthy, as only a couple of things can be fixed at a time.

The immediate plan is to work on healing her infections. Our hope is that her bloodwork will improve as a result. If it doesn't, that may indicate that she has kidney disease, and we hope that's not the case.

While undergoing treatment, Kiwi is loving her big soft bed, which we're sure she has never been on before. And she is finally getting doted on, probably for the first time in her life.

We are doing everything we can to give Kiwi the chance to live, and while we cannot be certain of the outcome, she deserves it after all she has gone through.

Please share Kiwi's story with friends and family, and with anyone else you know who may be interested in helping.

Thank you so much for your support!
