Campaign Details
Possible causes were leptospirosis or, more unlikely but possible, Addison’s disease. Then tests for both possible causes came back negative. The vets were not certain he would even live through the night.
The Mystery Deepens
Throughout Sunday Caleb had been receiving fluids and antibiotics, an appropriate treatment no matter what problem was identified. By midnight Sunday, he began to rally. He could walk unsteadily and his kidneys were functioning. (Yea!) By Monday morning a recheck of his bloodwork revealed kidney values almost normal. What? What was going on????????
The next step in resolving the mystery was an ultrasound, and finally the cause was identified. A part of a CORNCOB—yes, a corncob. Caleb had eaten a piece of a corncob and it lodged in his small intestine causing a blockage. After successful surgery to remove the corncob Monday afternoon and another overnight at the vet’s to monitor his recovery and kidney values, Caleb came home Tuesday afternoon.
What a Relief!
Caleb was a very lucky boy. This could have been so much worse for him. We were afraid we were going to lose him and the vets were baffled, then amazed at what they found. And where did he find a corncob, as there is no corn in or near his foster home? We’ll never know. However, his new family, when we find them, will have to be alert to what Caleb may decide to put in his mouth.
We Need Your Help
After Caleb’s terrible weekend, we are left with an enormous bill--$6500. We’re thrilled he is going to be fine, and would have done whatever it took to save him. But now we need your help. Please chip in any amount you can and then share Caleb's story.
In these COVID-19 days in which we are not able to participate in fundraising events, our resources are thin yet the dogs that need us are still knocking on our door. We pray our rescue friends will help us keep that door open to all who come calling.
Ever Grateful!

Caleb Today
Once the surgery was completed, Caleb healed quickly. (It took us much longer to recover from the scare he gave us to be sure.) Before long he met his new family and went to his forever home. It is a perfect home for him and he and his family are crazy about each other. He's now settled in and having a wonderful time. We're grateful and so happy he now has a loving home. PS-His new family has secured pet insurance for him...just to be safe.
Lizzy's Lodge Rescue
About the Organization
Lizzy's Lodge Rescue takes in dogs from shelters and, more recently, from families who no longer can care for them. Our Lizzy's dogs are often abused, generally neglected and many times afraid of people or other animals. We give dogs whatever time they need to heal physically and emotionally and to develop the confidence to settle into a new, loving home and the happy life they were always meant to have.
