Atom Is Fighting To Live, Please Help!

Adorable little 3-month-old Atom is fighting for his life. His owner bought him from Craig's List 6 days ago. Atom became very sick and was diagnosed with Parvo. The owner could not afford to provide Atom with the care he needed so he surrendered him to us. We rushed him to an emergency hospital where he is currently receiving excellent care. Atom is in isolation with a feeding tube. He is receiving IV fluids, medications for vomiting, diarrhea, appetite, etc. If Atom can get through a 3-day critical period, he will still need isolation, special care and regular monitoring for up to 2 weeks.

PLEASE help us care for this deserving little guy!

We would like to give one final update on Atom. He is healthy enough now that we hope his future will be like most other puppies - healthy, happy, and well loved.

Atom has been pretty raw all over from tubes, IV’s , and diarrhea, so we are leaving his cone on for a while longer. But he is up and about, playing and eating like a puppy.

He is scheduled to start his puppy vaccines next week. He has been kept away from other dogs for his protection (compromised immune system) and the protection of the other dogs (Atom could still shed some virus particles).

It was unclear for a long time if this little life could be saved. We, as an organization, have been very moved by the kindness and generosity of everyone who helped to make this outcome possible. Thank you again.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Good news! Atom has been discharged from the hospital and has started his recovery in a foster home.

He is starting to act like a puppy, barking, tail wagging, playing. He seems to love belly rubs, but what dog doesn’t? His immune system is weak, so he will be isolated from other dogs until he can receive all his puppy vaccines.

We are hopeful that Atom is out of the hospital for good. We are encouraged by this very big step.

The hospital bills we have received are more than anyone could have expected when this all started. We are still trying to raise more money on Atom's fundraising page to help with some of these expenses. As always, please continue to share Atom's story with anyone you think might be interested in helping. Your support is greatly appreciated!

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Atom seems to have finally turned the corner!

On Monday, Atom displayed his first small, but measurable, improvement. The vet was able to get him to eat a small amount of kitten food. And his diarrhea wasn’t as severe as it was in prior days. They planned to continue to try more solid feeding and reduce some of the extraordinary medications. His protein levels were still below normal, but improved.

On Wednesday, he was eating small amounts of food on his own. The nasal feeding tube is now gone. He still has diarrhea, which may take longer to resolve since his digestive track was attacked by the virus.

Atom may still look sad in the above picture, but the vet says he is pretty happy and starting to play, then nap. They're hoping to discharge him from the hospital in a day or two.

It has taken the financial support and prayers of so many to get Atom to this point. We are grateful for all of this support!

Please continue to share Atom's story with others whom you think may be interested in helping with this cause. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Atom is still fighting to get well.

The vet said that this has been one of the worst cases of Parvo she has ever seen. The good news is that the vet tells us that Atom was more energetic and looked brighter on Sunday.

Atom is still not eating and still has severe diarrhea. His protein level continues to be very low and they will give him another plasma transfusion today.

The vet summarized that Atom just needs more time.

Atom's daily care has become a very big financial challenge for us. His current medical bill is climbing to over $20,000. Because of this, we are increasing our fundraising goal in an attempt to help offset some of these expenses. It's difficult to foresee how any dog will do, how quickly they will heal, or even if they will survive once they get Parvo. As mentioned earlier, Atom's case appears to be more challenging than some.

Please continue to share Atom's story with family and friends. We need as much help as we can get to support this little guy.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has already donated to help with Atom's medical expenses! Providing this level of care for any dog would not be possible without the kindness of caring people like you!

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

We have another update on Atom that we'd like to share with you.

Atom has been very lethargic since he became ill. Today he is described as bright and feeling better. He wants to walk around and he barks for attention. His white blood cell count has rebounded. BUT, he is still not eating on his own and has ongoing bouts of diarrhea. Thus, his protein level is too low, so he will be getting a plasma transfusion. Atom is better, but not out of the woods yet.

We are doing everything we can for Atom. Your support has been a big help. Please continue to share his story with friends and family. Atom will continue to need medical care for a while.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Here is an update on our little guy, Atom. The picture above was taken when he first started showing signs of being sick. The picture below was taken yesterday at the hospital.

Last night and today Atom was doing worse, but the vet predicted this might happen. He stands and wants attention, which shows he is fighting. But he doesn’t want to eat and has frequent diarrhea. He is tolerating his fluid tube a little better. His temperature is normal, but he has few white blood cells, which are apparently being used to fight infection.

Please continue to share Atom's story with others whom you think may be interested in helping. Atom still has a long way to go.

    Thank you for your support.

Campaign Details

Parvo in puppies is caused by canine parvovirus. It is a highly contagious virus and is classified as a disease of the stomach and small intestines because this is where the virus does the most damage. Parvo in puppies can also affect the bone marrow and lymphopoietic tissues, and in some cases can also affect the heart. Our vet tells us that the virus does appear to be attacking Atom's bone marrow.

Puppies who have not completed all 3 of their parvo vaccines are most susceptible.

Atom is receiving all the medical care recommended for dogs in his condition, but this care is very expensive. We are reaching out today to ask for help with Atom's medical expenses.

Your donation of any amount will go a long way toward making sure Atom gets a fighting chance to survive this terrible disease. In addition, please share Atom's story with friends and family. Thank you so much for caring!
