Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue

Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue (SSR) rescues dogs from high kill shelters throughout the country. Many of the dogs would never make it out of the shelter. With your financial support SSR can continue saving German Shepherds and other dogs BECAUSE EVERY DOG DESERVES A HOME.

Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue (SSR) is an amazing all-volunteer rescue based in Virginia, Shenandoah Valley. We do not have a facility, instead we rely on fosters to care for our dogs. This year (our first year) we expanded our reach outside of Virginia by also working to save German Shepherds and other dogs in heavily populated shelters throughout the country to include Texas, Florida, West Virginia and many more. SSR also works with owners who are surrendering their dogs due to unforeseen situations. Many southern states still believe their dogs are possessions and they treat them as such. When they are finished with them or tired of them, they just let them loose or abandon them in desolate parts of cities or towns, making them fend for themselves and their own survival. Many of the dogs find their way into one of the countless overcrowded shelters. Because there are too many dogs and not enough space, many (sometimes 100's per day) are killed at each shelter. These dogs didn't ask to be there—they didn't ask to be born. It was some irresponsible and unfortunate circumstance that put this dog there. This is where we (SSR) come in! We collaborate with rescues in these overpopulated areas who help us pull dogs who would otherwise be killed. We don't pull the "easy" dogs. Each dog has their own story and their own baggage—some more than others. We also have a fantastic network of fosters and vets in these states where we rescue to get the dogs healthy enough to travel to Virginia. The veterinary and boarding costs can mount up quickly. Then there's transport— it can get quite expensive and many times our volunteers make the long drive to pick up a group ready to make their trip to freedom and a forever home. Once in Virginia, dogs are again placed in foster homes for a bit so they can be assessed and rechecked by the local vets. By this time, between the vets & fosters in both states, we have a pretty good idea of the history and personality of our dogs. Application checkers and home checkers make sure potential adopters and their homes would be a good fit for one of our dogs. We have meet and greets with the dogs, their foster, and the potential adopter. This is where the magic happens! Many times, it's love at first sight, and other times it may take a few tries…but it does happen! SSR is often the difference between life and death for many rescued dogs that have "run out of time" or are "deemed unadoptable" due to medical issues, behavioral issues, or age. Rescued dogs receive required medical care (emergency, routine, and specialty) to the fullest extent. SSR vet bills average $7500 a week; this includes boarding, medications and supplies (to include food, heartworm/flea & tick prevention as well as any needs to help with the dogs in their daily lives) and doesn't even cover transport fees. There are usually one or two emergency vet bills snuck in there as well. These dogs have no voice - - will you help us be theirs? We cannot continue to rescue the dogs without your support. Please stand with SSR in our belief that EVERY dog deserves a home by making a donation today. When you look into the eyes of a saved dog, it is ALL worth it! Thank you for your support.
