💔 She is a family member

Urgent help needed for Ruby!

This heartbreaking image was sent to us from a hospital in Mississippi. A family rushed Ruby, their beloved dog in after she swallowed a stick that had IMPALED in her chest. Ruby is critical; her chest cavity is quickly filling with fluid and blood; Ruby is struggling to breathe. Time is running out and Ruby needs chest tubes inserted and life-saving surgery now in order to survive. The hospital reached out as a last-ditch effort to help this family. We couldn't say no; she is only one year old, and this cannot be the way it ends.

Please help us save Ruby's life; we are her last hope.

The family told the hospital they’d do anything to save her but could not afford the $15,000 in care needed to save her life.  The hospital offered to seek rescue, and once we said yes, they told us the family would surrender her to save her life.  We advised them that we could never separate a family because of financial hardship.  The family fell to their knees and huddled together and cried.

As you can see from the family photos Ruby is not just a dog, but a valued and loved family member. Ruby will be given the fighting chance that she deserves. We have already authorized the hospital to proceed with all life-saving measures.  We will fight our hardest to save her life.  The bill is estimated to run around $15,000 and the hospital has graciously offered to discount the bill by $3,000 as their own contribution to keeping this family together.

Will please you join in the fight with us to save Ruby's life?

Second Chance Rescue NYC

About the Organization

In 2009, Second Chance Rescue NYC began as a small dream, founded on the firm belief that all animals deserve love and care, and that no animal should ever be subjected to abuse, neglect or homelessness. All proceeds go directly to the animals, and to date, we have relied solely on donations from loyal supporters. Our mission is to offer a second chance to those animals less fortunate — those with critical medical, emotional or behavioral issues.

We have some amazing news to share! Ruby has officially left the building and is home with her loving family! We can't thank everyone enough for your devotion to saving lives and keeping families together! Below is a message from Ruby’s family that they wanted us to share with you.

“This is our story about our dog Ruby. We adopted Ruby in December of 2020, and our daughter named her Ruby. She immediately became part of our family the second she entered our lives. Ruby is a very smart, kind, and wonderful dog. She is a goofy girl who loves to play fetch. You could say Ruby is a very happy-go-lucky kind of girl. Ruby has always been a healthy dog until about two weeks ago. Ruby refused to eat for us, could barely get around, and had heavy breathing; we knew something was wrong. We frantically rushed Ruby to the local vet, and he then directed us to our closest emergency hospital 2 hours away.

The vet there said for Ruby to get the treatment and surgery that was needed, it would be an enormous amount that my family couldn’t afford. We said we’d do anything in our power to save Ruby’s life, and we offered to surrender her to a rescue if that meant keeping Ruby alive. This is where an awesome organization stepped up and helped out with Ruby’s care. Not only did they offer help for her medical expenses, but they also told us we could keep our beloved girl. My family is so thankful for this. If it weren’t for this organization, we wouldn’t have sweet Ruby with us today. Our family would have been broken, especially the children who love Ruby so much. If it weren’t for Second Chance Rescue, many dogs like Ruby wouldn’t have a chance.

My family is very thankful for everyone's help. We will never be able to thank you enough for this keeping our family together. It has been a blessing to bring Ruby back home and still have her be a part of our family. Without her, our family would be incomplete. Our family would like to thank everyone again for all the prayers and donations. Second Chance Rescue has sure been a blessing to my family, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

    Thanks again,
    The Robertson Family.”

We wanted to share an update with you on Ruby.

Due to the high blood loss, Ruby needed a blood transfusion and stabilization before surgery could be done. Thankfully she was able to be stabilized, and surgery was performed. The doctors performed a median sternotomy surgery (cut through the sternum to go into the chest). She had to be on a ventilator during the procedure. We also took cultures during surgery to determine what bacteria is causing the infection. The doctors have been flushing out her chest to remove as much bacteria as possible. They then placed a chest tube to drain any fluid after surgery and a JP drain on each of her sides in the subcutaneous tissue to drain fluid from 2 abscesses that formed.

After surgery, she was stable and was in ICU on pain medications. Her loving family visited her and once she saw them she became a bit more bright eyed.

And now look at her here, giving and taking some lovin' with the wonderful Dr. McKenzie!

We still have a lot of work to do but all seems to be moving in the right direction. Thanks to you and so many amazing and caring people, we're almost at our goal for Ruby, but still have a little ways to go, so please share her campaign with others you think might want to help this precious girl and her family.

    We love you!
