Help Penny walk again

Urgent help needed for Penny!

At only four months old, Penny has known nothing but distress and pain. Found dragging her back legs and ultimately dumped at a very high kill shelter in Texas, she was given only a couple days to find rescue. She was unable to walk, pulling herself along by her front legs. The shelter put out a plea and no one responded. When we saw her plight last night , we could not look away. To be honest, we are not ready for this expense and we are praying that our Pack once again supports our efforts to save an innocent life.

Penny was immediately moved to our vet this afternoon and it was found that she has a severe fracture in her right back femur as well as a clean break in her left ankle (bones are completely severed). Both of her back legs have suffered from traumatic injuries (believed to hit by a car a while ago) and her bones are also now showing signs of fungal infection.

At only16 weeks of age, Penny has known nothing but pain and suffering. She has been trying to walk on her own and periodically finds a way to stand (Amazingly) although awkwardly but, most of the time, she can be found dragging her back end in an effort to get some sort of affection.   She came into the shelter on 1/12.

She sat there for three days with no veterinary care!

Can you imagine!  The fear, the pain, the anxiety. She is just a baby, left alone without any pain meds or support. Penny is now resting comfortably at our vet. Her injuries are so extensive that she needs the attention of an orthopedic specialist. The preliminary diagnosis has her needing specialized orthopedic surgery to repair the damage that has been done from whatever accident she endured but also for the significant and lingering damage that resulted from lack of care.  We are determined to get her back on 4 paws.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Orthopedic surgery is immensely expensive. Given the fact that her fractures and broken bones have already begun to heal improperly she will likely need to have both legs re-broken and reset.  Still, she will likely never walk properly again but we can make her comfortable and ready for a forever home with your help. Simply put, we can’t do this without you.

Please consider donating whatever you can to help in Penny’s fight. She has suffered long enough: Be her hero today and donate towards her care.

Life is truly the gift you give!❤️🙏

Thanking you in advance. I know we can do this.

Sincerely,

Jody and the LGAR Team

    Hi Pack!!

Its been a busy seven weeks in rescue and I apologize I havent updated sooner.

However I wanted to share with you how well Penny is doing. This dog is just a ray of light.

She did wind up catching a doggy cold and was feeling pretty miserable for about 10 days but we got her over that and now shes finally trying to show her puppy self. Shes trying to play!!

The orthopedic surgeon is very happy with her progress and feels that shes making a great recovery. Her foster mom Kelly is absolutely the greatest gift for this puppy and our rescue. She has given her so much care, love, and time and Penny is thriving. We feel so blessed.

I wanted to share with you how well she is doing and thank you, once again, for all of your confidence and support. Penny is where she is because of each and everyone of you. There are no words to express our appreciation and we are so grateful that there are people like you in this world. ??

    With gratitude,

Jody and the Looking Glass Team

    Happy Sunday,

Just wanted to give everyone a quick Penny update.  She is recovering well from her surgery and is in great spirits.  She doesn't seem to know (or want to accept) that she has had a major surgery as she wiggles and tries to play constantly.  Foster mom Kelly is taking the best care of her and we could not be more thrilled.

This week will be her first bandage change and check-up.  Something tells me it is going to go very well.  ??

Thank you for your continued support and prayers!!!  They are working!

    Kind regards,

    Jody and the LGAR Team

PUPDATE:  Penny is out of surgery and in recovery!!

Penny is a force to reckon with. She is as determined as she is sweet. She had not two but three chronic fractures - her hip (think where the ball joint of the femur fits into the socket), her femur (right leg) and her tibia (left leg). All injuries are consistent with a car accident- a while ago.....mind you they think she is no more than 16 weeks old.

Her bones began to heal, misaligned as they were, and her young muscle began to continue its development around her crooked bones. This made surgery much more difficult: Straighten the leg too much and her muscles won’t be long enough to allow her to be able to bend at the knee.   As a result part of her femur needed to be shaved down and shortened to ensure she could bend appropriately.

Her surgery lasted approximately 5-hours. She got a pin and a plate in her Femur and two pins in her tibia. Her hip was not repaired bc the surgeon felt that the healing progressed so much that to break and align would run the risk of blood flow issues which could result in the femur dying essentially. So we watch that. The good news, he could manipulate it without pain.

She is in recovery on doggie morphine. If all goes well, she will go home tomorrow with a fiberglass cast over her tibia and a dressing that will need to be changed weekly. Her femur  is held comfortably in place with the plate and screw.

She has a long road ahead of her. Min 4-6 weeks just in a cast. Therapy to be determined. But God she is a love. And her foster mamma Kelly is a gift from God. We could not be more grateful for her commitment and dedication.

Pack, we did it. Together. And now we will watch this baby blossom and know what love, care and family really means. You gave her life. YOU are her angels on earth. We are forever grateful.

I will update again. Stay tuned and God Bless.

    Kind regards,

    Jody and the LGAR Team

Wow!  Wow!  Wow!!!  We did it!  You did it. Simply amazing and so generous. Knowing we have your support for cases like this really makes all the heartache easier to bear!

Penny has been in the care of our vet for the last two nights and is now on the road (as I write this) to a specialist in Austin to evaluate her injuries. Given the fact that she has been suffering for a while and there is a possible fungal infection brewing in her bones, she needs more advanced care. We have a wonderful foster nearby that will be visiting with her so she knows she is loved and has a bright future ahead.

I will update again once we get a game plan in place for procedures and next steps. I am so grateful for all the support and can’t wait to share Penny’s journey with you.

    Kind regards,

    Jody and the LGAR Team
