Lucy’s Story
Lucy came to us after a kind person visiting from out of town noticed that she was not just any feral kitty. This Good Samaritan could tell that even though Lucy wouldn’t let her close enough to touch, this orange girl wasn’t meant to be an outdoor kitty. She was skinny and sick, and although she was scared, her eyes were pleading for help. According to neighbors, Lucy lived on the street for her entire life — 4 long years. As a kitten, she suffered a major injury that severed part of her tail. Things didn’t improve much after that. She eked out an existence, having litter after litter of kittens. Occasionally kind people would let her inside their homes when it got really cold... but she always had to leave again. No one seemed to want to give her a chance to be a house cat, until her Good Samaritan came along.
Operation Press Paws Steps In
OPP got Lucy spayed and vaccinated as part of our TNR efforts. Thanks to the advocacy of her finder, we got her into foster care right after. According to the clinic vet, she was emaciated and suffering from flea anemia, mouth ulcers, and a nasty upper respiratory infection. While she was very shy, she immediately accepted slow and gentle petting and began to purr and purr and purr. She was so happy to be safe inside! With her fleas, mouth ulcers, and URI treated, Lucy quickly gained weight and started looking much better. But something was still wrong. Despite her improvement, it was obvious that she was in pain. She had congestion that wasn’t caused by her URI, and there was a foul odor around her mouth. A recheck didn’t provide any answers, so volunteers brought Lucy to a trusted clinic for a second opinion. Our vet immediately noticed that the majority of Lucy’s teeth are badly infected. The arrows in the attached photos indicate pus, while the brackets show how much bone and gum coverage of her tooth roots has been lost to chronic infection.
We Need Your Help to Give Lucy a New Smile
Lucy needs these rotten, painful teeth removed ASAP! Our vet squeezed her in for an urgent surgery for 10/13. The cost for all the extractions Lucy will need is about $1500, and we don’t have the funds. Yet we don’t have time to spare; Lucy has suffered with this for far too long already! Your generous support will allow us to get Lucy her surgery on Tuesday and give her enormous relief from her dental pain. Our vet believes getting rid of the infection will also help her chronic congestion, but fixing her pain is the number one priority. She is a beautiful, gentle, warm and sunshine-sweet girl who really deserves this chance to leave the misery of her old life behind her for good. Thank you so much for helping us help Lucy get a pain-free new smile!
