Hit by a car and lying in a ditch!

Urgent help needed for Fester!

Fester was hit by a car before these photos were taken. He sustained a femur fracture in his right back leg and couldn't walk so he was just lying in the ditch on the side of the road. He also has chronic dry eyes with ulcers and cannot see very well.

Thankfully his savior, Jesse, drove by and pulled over for him. She posted for help and then took him to the ER for us. He's been extending his neck and throwing his head back. That combined with his gunky eyes made us think perhaps he had distemper but he's not displaying any other symptoms. With his eyes being super dry, we think his head/neck movements are from being in pain.

Can you help him?

He was also anemic when he arrived at the ER and needed a blood transfusion. He’s been resting comfortably on fentanyl and has even been snoring in his kennel. His ER bill is already over $4K and he still needs femur surgery and an ophthalmologist visit.

It hurts to think about him lying there so frightened and waiting for help, and it hurts to think about what could’ve happened had someone not noticed him. Now he needs your help.

Fester had a check up with his surgeons on Friday and has healed incredibly well. They say he’s doing really good, but he’s got to remain on kennel rest for another month, while he continues to heal. He’ll go back on 10/25 for more X-rays and then hopefully he'll be all cleared.

Thanks so much for all your help!

    Warm regards,

    Fester is doing well!

He had FHO surgery while he was at the ER, so he will have ~8 weeks of recovery time/kennel rest. One of his eyes had a prolapsed iris. We attempted to save it, and he was taken into surgery but sutures weren't sticking well and that dropped the prognosis of saving that eye down very low. There were already risks with the eye being so dry, so we decided to just remove it. That surgery went well!

He's now in foster care and will be spending the next 8 weeks healing.

He's a very sweet boy with a lot of love to give and is only about 9 months old.

Thanks so much for all your help!

    Warm regards,

Fester is still at the ER but we picked him up yesterday to take him to an ophthalmologist appointment.

They did some testing on his eyes and found his “good” eye (his right eye) had zero tear production, so this eye is severely dry. The bad eye (his left eye), had ruptured and his iris prolapsed. This eye had tear production but the doc suspected it to be from gunk or the eye meds he was on. He did surprisingly have functional vision in that eye.

So we were given two options with the left eye — we could graft it to try and salvage it or we could remove it. We opted to try and save it so he had surgery later in the evening. They called while he was under anesthesia and said his cornea was severely damaged and sutures weren’t sticking to the area so that dropped the prognosis of the graft way low. Feeling like there was no other option, we decided to remove it. It’s unfortunate since he had vision but that eye was giving him lots of problems and with dry eye, the chances of salvaging it were low.

He was taken back to the ER after surgery and remained there overnight while they monitored him. His foster family will be picking him up later today and he’s officially on his journey to recovery!

    Thank you for helping Fester.

Fester had a femur fracture which he has had surgery for. He’s already walking well in a sling but will have a few weeks of recovery time ahead of him.

His gunky eyes that we suspected might be distemper turned out to be chronic dry eyes. He for sure has a corneal ulcer in one eye, potentially both. Our next step is to see an ophthalmologist.

Fester is estimated to be about 9 months old. He has his whole life ahead of him and we’re happy he’s getting a second chance at life.

We’re so grateful for all the support you’ve shown him, and we know he is too. 💙

Thanks to you and so many other wonderful people, we are now about $600 away from our goal!

    Big hugs,
