"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." On the day Leena, our first Galga, was no longer needed by her owner. She was to be hung from a tree as the tradition of the galgueros. On that day, evil was not going to win! A woman overheard what was about to happen and stepped in to save Leena's life. The woman has never been part of any galgo rescue, and now that she saved Leena's life she did not know what to do with her. The woman brought Leena to SOS Galgos in Barcelona Spain and that is where her journey to the US began. The woman in Spain most likely never thought about how that one single act of kindness would change the lives of so many people and in turn save many more galgos.

The Galgo Espanol

The Spanish greyhound, or Galgo, is one of the most persecuted dog breeds, but very few people have ever heard of this breed. Galgos are used to hunt hares in the Spanish countryside. They spend their lives in damp, tiny, dirty holes or windowless shacks deprived of daylight, exercise and affection. Between 50.000 and 100.000 Galgos are killed or abandoned every year after the hunting season. Every year healthy Galgos are killed, beaten to death, drowned or abandoned when they no longer live up to their owners' expectations. The breeders, the so called galgueros, breed hoping to end up with the fastest dog to compete and hunt the hare, but overbreeding leads to the "throwing out" of thousands and thousands of Galgos every year.

The lucky ones are rescued by a handful of shelters in Spain, operated by dedicated individuals. Almost all of the resources to help the dogs come from outside of Spain, namely the US, UK, Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland and Germany.

Our Mission

Love Hope Believe Galgo Adoption's aim is to support the Galgo rescues in Spain to end the cruel treatment of Galgos, find loving homes for rescued Galgos, and to bring light to the plight of the Galgos. One particular shelter, Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert regularly houses 300-500 Galgos (although that number can swell to 800+ after hunting season ends). We have committed to helping this shelter.

Transporting a Galgo from Spain to the U.S. takes a lot of paperwork and the costs add up very quickly. Transport costs range from $800.00 - $1500 per dog this includes alterations, vaccinations, heartworm, transport to airport in Madrid Spain, crate for flight, freight charge to fly dog, and airline ticket for person escorting the Galgos. We try to keep costs down as much as we can by finding people that are flying from Madrid to Chicago on non-stop flights, we ask that we attach the Galgos to their tickets. The person escorting the dogs only has to carry the paperwork for the dogs and our volunteers take care of everything else including all costs to transport the Galgos.

The needs of each particular Galgo will vary depending on the quality of life it had in Spain, and of course on how cruelly it was treated. The shelters which care for the Galgos before they are transported to the US do their best to evaluate the character and fears of each dog. We then foster the Galgo so that their new families are as well informed as possible as to how best to settle in with their new family member. Remember the physical scars of their abuse may heal quickly, but their emotional and mental scars will take much longer to heal. Anyone wanting to adopt a Galgo must appreciate this and work with kindness and patience on the continued rehabilitation of their hound.
