Please Help Linda Walk Again

We urgently need your help!

We need your donations to help this young Maltese mix, Linda, who recently came into American Maltese Association Rescue, paralyzed in her hind legs. She was immediately scheduled for a neurological consult and MRI and was diagnosed with acute disc extrusion causing severe spinal cord compression. Due to the severity of her condition, she had surgery that same day. The consult, MRI and spinal surgery costs came to $8000, but we were her only chance. Now, because of that surgery, her prognosis is very good that she will be able to walk again.

Please donate if you can, keep Linda in your thoughts and SHARE this campaign.

Campaign Details

Linda was a happy, energetic three-and-a-half-year-old dog running through the house and playing. Then one day her owners came home from work and Linda wasn't her usual happy, tail-wagging greeter. They could tell something was wrong. She wasn't eating or going to the bathroom. She started shaking and showing weakness in her back legs. They took her to the vet who started her on medication and instructions for strict crate rest. The next morning, she was unable to urinate or walk. Over the next few days,  her injury had worsened and she was in a lot of pain.  The vet recommended the owners pursue a neurology consult with an MRI and likely subsequent surgery. The owners wanted the best for Linda, but due to financial restrictions, they felt they were unable to give Linda the care she needed. They contacted the AMAR Coordinator in Virginia,  who explained the owner surrender process and made arrangements to pick Linda up, as soon as possible. Time was of the essence. She was then scheduled for an MRI with a neurologist. Based on the outcome of the MRI, surgery was performed a few hours later. We couldn't delay it to raise the $8,000, as it might have jeopardized Linda ever using her rear legs again, so we charged the invoice to our credit card and proceeded with the surgery. Linda is now rehabilitating in her foster mom's home.

This was a very expensive procedure, but Linda's a young dog and deserved to be able to walk again and not be in pain. It will take 4-8 weeks of rehabilitation, but the specialist is quite sure that she will be able to walk using her back legs again.

During this time of COVID-19, we have had funding shortages, because of the economic impact of the pandemic. We know these are challenging times for all but we hope that you may be able to find it in your heart to donate, no matter how big or small, to help pay this large veterinary bill. It's easy to donate. Just pick a square and choose an amount. If you have a dog, share his/her photo in the square. And also share this campaign.  We appreciate your kindness. Please send some healing thoughts Linda's way, too.

UPDATE:  We wanted to keep you posted on Linda's progress. The spinal operation went well and she's been rehabilitating with her foster mom, Peggy. Peggy  said, "She wants to run and roll over on her back for me to give her a belly rub. I pick her up then and hold her, and unfortunately, have to put her back in her 4 x 4 pen so that she doesn't overdo it. She loves people."  She goes back for a post-surgical follow-up tomorrow. Please keep her in your thoughts. She is now walking in the house and the yard. Remember, she couldn't walk on her back legs before the operation!

We are still a long way from our goal to pay her large medical bill. If you haven't donated, we would appreciate it if you can. At the very least, please SHARE this campaign.

    Thank you!!
