Some GivingTuesday & Holiday Love!

We are in crisis! There's no better way to put it.

We've been severely challenged in 2024 - at or over capacity for most of the year, but our work can't end. We cannot stop helping the abandoned and abused animals in/around Defiance County. We MUST continue to be their voice.

At FDHS, every wag, every purr, and every happy bark tells a story. A story of second chances, love, and healing. But we can't do it alone. We need your help. With your support, we can continue to provide food, medical care, and a loving home for these animals.

This Giving Tuesday, please consider making a donation, no matter the size. Thank you for giving them a future!

This is the face of thousands of dogs and cats who sit in shelters across the country. They are shut down, scared, ill or hurt and uncertain of where their future lies. A narrative that plays out far too often. These dogs "were" somebody's pet.  They've been abused and abandoned. Many are just "dumped" at our facility, and/or in horrible shape physically.  We are their only hope for a future...they need us. We are grateful that Fort Defiance Humane Society is a no-kill shelter.  We will find these sweet souls a great home, but it's taking longer and requiring far more resources than ever before.

Fort Defiance Humane Society has been at or over capacity for most of the year - something we have not experienced in the past.  Our wait list is endless. It requires more labor to care for so many animals.  Our medical cases have doubled this year - required treatments for heartworm positive dogs, eye enucleations, hip surgeries, skin allergies, and the list goes on and on.  As well, just like all of us personally, our general expenses like utilities and supplies has gone through the roof.

These dogs and cats sit at the shelter, waiting for their chance to find their own family. Their stay with us is longer because our community is saturated with too many animals in need of homes. Their biggest advocates are the volunteers and staff telling their stories to the public. They love them, and often, the love they give these homeless animals is the only love they've ever known.

While we are so grateful to our community of supporters for helping us survive this long, this year have been exceptionally challenging in the non-profit world. More animals staying longer, less grants available, less donations, and higher expenses.  But we can’t stop saving the fur babies. Our work is too important, so we need to continue to push forward. If you're not in the position to donate, you can also help by sharing our campaign with others you think might want to help too.

December 3rd is GivingTuesday. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good and help others. GivingTuesday is four days after Black Friday and the day after Cyber Monday. We ask that if at all possible, you try to spend just a tiny bit less on those days, so that you can give a tiny bit to us. That’s all we ask… If we can get enough people to give us a small amount, we can get through this mess. We're pleading for your help... they need your help.

Somehow, we always find a way to make it through for the benefit of these precious souls. Sometimes it almost seems impossible and we look back and wonder how we got by. Then we quickly remember, our miracle is you!

Thank you for helping us help them in honor of GivingTuesday and in the spirit of the season. Happy Holidays!
